What makes England and Wales different

On top of the 6 bank holidays shared across the UK, England and Wales have Easter Monday on Monday 29 March and the Summer bank holiday on Monday 30 August.

Bank holidays and annual leave

Your staff have no statutory right to a day off on a bank holiday. Under the Working Time Regulations 1998, most workers are entitled to 5.6 weeks of paid holiday a year, capped at 28 days, and you can choose to count bank holidays as part of it.

The law sets no extra rate for bank holiday work either. What you pay, or the day off you give in return, depends on the contract. Recording those hours like any other shift helps you pay what you agreed and show it if anyone asks.
