Who Hawaii state holidays apply to

State holidays in Hawaii are the days the state gives its own employees off with pay. They don’t bind private employers: whether your team gets these days off, and whether they’re paid, depends on your policy, your employment contracts or a union agreement.

Hawaii’s holiday statute covers public offices and state employees. We found no Hawaii law that requires private employers to give state holidays off or to pay extra for working them. Source: Hawaii Department of Human Resources Development, Holidays to be observed in 2026 and 2027.

Holidays that fall on a weekend

Hawaii observes a Saturday holiday on the Friday before and a Sunday holiday on the Monday after. General Election Day is a holiday only in even years, so not in 2027, and there’s no holiday the day after Thanksgiving.

In 2027:

  • Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and is observed on Monday, July 5.
  • Christmas falls on Saturday, December 25 and is observed on Friday, December 24.

How Hawaii compares with the federal holidays

Of the 11 federal holidays, Hawaii doesn’t give state employees a paid day off for Juneteenth and Columbus Day. On top of the federal list, it adds Prince Jonah Kūhiō Kalanianaʻole Day on Friday, March 26; Good Friday on Friday, March 26; and Statehood Day on Friday, August 20.
