Who Mississippi state holidays apply to

State holidays in Mississippi are the days the state gives its own employees off with pay. They don’t bind private employers: whether your team gets these days off, and whether they’re paid, depends on your policy, your employment contracts or a union agreement.

Mississippi’s holiday statute covers public offices and state employees. We found no Mississippi law that requires private employers to give state holidays off or to pay extra for working them. Source: Mississippi Secretary of State, State holidays.

Holidays that fall on a weekend

Mississippi law moves a Sunday holiday to the next day but has no Saturday rule: the governor declares how Saturday holidays are observed. Each fall the governor’s proclamation sets the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year closures.

In 2027:

  • Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and is observed on Monday, July 5.
  • Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and is observed on Friday, December 24 (to be confirmed).

How Mississippi compares with the federal holidays

Of the 11 federal holidays, Mississippi doesn’t give state employees a paid day off for Juneteenth and Columbus Day. On top of the federal list, it adds Confederate Memorial Day on Monday, April 26.

Optional holidays

These days are on the state’s list but aren’t full paid days off, so they’re not in the count or the calendar download.

  • Day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 26: optional holiday, agency heads may close for part or all of the day. To be confirmed. It isn’t a statutory holiday; in 2025 and 2026 the governor let agency heads close for part or all of the day.
