Tennessee hasn’t published its 2027 closure list, so these dates follow the 2026 pattern and the state’s weekend rule. December 31 would be the observed New Year’s Day 2028, which counts toward 2028, not the 12 holidays of 2027.

To be confirmed

  • Day after Thanksgiving, Friday, November 26: Offices close only if the governor swaps Columbus Day for this Friday again, as in 2026.
  • New Year’s Day 2028, Friday, December 31: It follows the state’s Saturday rule, but the 2027 closure list isn’t published yet.

These days aren’t in the calendar download until they’re confirmed.

Who Tennessee state holidays apply to

State holidays in Tennessee are the days the state gives its own employees off with pay. They don’t bind private employers: whether your team gets these days off, and whether they’re paid, depends on your policy, your employment contracts or a union agreement.

Tennessee’s holiday list covers state offices and employees. We found no Tennessee law that requires private employers to give state holidays off or to pay extra for working them. Source: Tennessee Department of Human Resources, State holidays.

Holidays that fall on a weekend

Tennessee substitutes the Friday before for a Saturday holiday and the Monday after for a Sunday holiday. The governor can add closure days and can move Columbus Day to the Friday after Thanksgiving.

In 2027:

  • Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19 and is observed on Friday, June 18.
  • Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and is observed on Monday, July 5.
  • Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and is observed on Friday, December 24.
  • New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday, January 1, 2028 and is observed on Friday, December 31 (to be confirmed).

How Tennessee compares with the federal holidays

Tennessee gives state employees all 11 federal holidays, though Columbus Day is still to be confirmed. On top of the federal list, it adds Good Friday on Friday, March 26.

Some shared holidays land on a different day. Columbus Day (Day after Thanksgiving in Tennessee) is observed on Friday, November 26 (to be confirmed), while the federal holiday is on Monday, October 11.

Days that don’t close offices

These days are on the state’s list but aren’t full paid days off, so they’re not in the count or the calendar download.

  • Columbus Day, Monday, October 11: moved to the day after Thanksgiving in recent years. To be confirmed. In recent years the governor has moved Columbus Day to the Friday after Thanksgiving, keeping offices open in October; 2027 isn’t announced yet.
