Who Indiana state holidays apply to
State holidays in Indiana are the days the state gives its own employees off with pay. They don’t bind private employers: whether your team gets these days off, and whether they’re paid, depends on your policy, your employment contracts or a union agreement.
The governor’s holiday memo covers state civil service employees only. We found no Indiana law that requires private employers to give state holidays off or to pay extra for working them. Source: Office of the Governor of Indiana, 2027 holidays memorandum.
Holidays that fall on a weekend
The governor’s memo sets Indiana’s holidays each year. In 2027, holidays that fall on a weekend are observed on the nearest weekday for Monday-to-Friday offices, while round-the-clock operations keep the actual day.
In 2027:
- Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and is observed on Monday, July 5.
- Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and is observed on Friday, December 24.
- New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday, January 1, 2028 and is observed on Friday, December 31.
How Indiana compares with the federal holidays
Of the 11 federal holidays, Indiana doesn’t give state employees a paid day off for Juneteenth. On top of the federal list, it adds Good Friday on Friday, March 26; Primary Election Day on Tuesday, May 4; General Election Day on Tuesday, November 2; and Lincoln’s Birthday on Friday, November 26.
Some shared holidays land on a different day. Presidents’ Day (Washington’s Birthday in Indiana) is observed on Thursday, December 23, while the federal holiday is on Monday, February 15.
