Holidays that fall on a weekend

South Carolina moves a Saturday holiday to the Friday before and a Sunday holiday to the Monday after. When the Friday is already a holiday, the state uses the next workday, which is why Christmas Day and the day after Christmas fall on December 27 and 28 in 2027.

In 2027:

  • Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and is observed on Monday, July 5.
  • Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and is observed on Monday, December 27.
  • Day after Christmas falls on Sunday, December 26 and is observed on Tuesday, December 28.
  • New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday, January 1, 2028 and is observed on Friday, December 31 (to be confirmed).

How South Carolina compares with the federal holidays

Of the 11 federal holidays, South Carolina doesn’t give state employees a paid day off for Juneteenth and Columbus Day. On top of the federal list, it adds Confederate Memorial Day on Monday, May 10; Day after Thanksgiving Day on Friday, November 26; Christmas Eve on Friday, December 24; and Day after Christmas on Tuesday, December 28.

Some shared holidays land on a different day. Christmas Day is observed on Monday, December 27, while the federal holiday is on Friday, December 24.
