Who Texas state holidays apply to
State holidays in Texas are the days the state gives its own employees off with pay. They don’t bind private employers: whether your team gets these days off, and whether they’re paid, depends on your policy, your employment contracts or a union agreement.
Texas’s state holidays are set for state agencies and their employees. We found no Texas law that requires private employers to give state holidays off or to pay extra for working them. Source: Texas Government Code 662.005, Paid holidays for state employees (Texas.Public.Law).
Holidays that fall on a weekend
Texas doesn’t move holidays that fall on a weekend: under section 662.005 of the Government Code, a Saturday or Sunday holiday gives state employees no paid day off, no weekday in its place and no credit. On national holidays state agencies close; on most state holidays they stay open with a skeleton crew. The day after Thanksgiving, December 24 and December 26 close agencies.
In 2027:
- Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4, so state employees get no day off for it in 2027.
- Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25, so state employees get no day off for it in 2027.
- Day after Christmas falls on Sunday, December 26, so state employees get no day off for it in 2027.
How Texas compares with the federal holidays
Of the 11 federal holidays, Texas doesn’t give state employees a paid day off for Juneteenth and Columbus Day. In 2027, Independence Day and Christmas Day fall on a weekend and Texas gives no weekday off for them. On top of the federal list, it adds Day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 26 and Christmas Eve on Friday, December 24.
