State holidays and your team

A state holiday is a day the state closes its own offices. It doesn’t bind private employers, so whether your team gets the day off, and whether it’s paid, depends on your policy, your employment contracts or a union agreement.

For the federal list, see the US federal holidays for 2027.

Which states have the most paid state holidays in 2027?

Indiana and Missouri have the most, with 14 paid holidays for state employees, counting the ones still to be confirmed. Florida, Iowa, Texas, Wisconsin, and Wyoming have the fewest, with 9.

Which states don’t have Juneteenth as a paid state holiday?

Juneteenth is a federal holiday, but in 2027 it isn’t a paid day off for state employees in 18 states: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Hawaii, Indiana, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Some of them recognize it in other ways, which each state’s page explains.

Is the day after Thanksgiving a state holiday?

In many states, yes, though it isn’t a federal holiday. Friday, November 26, 2027 is a paid state holiday in 24 states, sometimes under another name, such as Lincoln’s Birthday in Indiana or Family Day in Nevada. In Colorado, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, and Tennessee it still depends on a decision for 2027.

Do private employers have to give state holidays off?

In general, no. State holidays are the days a state gives its own employees. A few states have rules that reach private businesses on some holidays, such as premium pay, store closing laws or a day off for veterans: Alabama, Maine, Massachusetts, Oregon, and Rhode Island. Each state’s page explains what applies there.
