How do I keep my team's working-time records in Mexico?

Since the reform of Mexico's Federal Labour Law published in the DOF on 1 May 2026, employers must record each worker's start and end times electronically. Kinmu helps you keep that record and export it.

This guide summarises what the decree says and how Kinmu helps. It does not replace legal advice or guarantee compliance. For your specific case, check with your legal adviser.

What the 2026 reform requires

The decree that amends Mexico’s Federal Labour Law (Ley Federal del Trabajo) to reduce working hours adds section XXXIV to article 132. Employers must record each worker’s working day electronically, including the start and end times, and hand that record to the authority when it asks for it.

  • The Ministry of Labour and Social Welfare (STPS) will issue general rules that set who the obligation applies to and its exceptions.
  • The electronic record is full proof if it is shown that the worker and the employer agreed on it.
  • Article 994, section IV Bis, sets a fine of 250 to 5,000 UMA for employers who don’t comply.

When it applies

  • The decree came into force on 1 May 2026.
  • From 1 May to 31 December 2026 there is a period for employers and workers to adjust their processes.
  • The STPS general rules on the electronic record come into force from 1 January 2027.

How the maximum working week goes down

Article 59 sets the maximum ordinary working week at 40 hours. It is reached gradually, from 1 January of each year. 48 hours in 2026, 46 in 2027, 44 in 2028, 42 in 2029 and 40 in 2030. The reduction can’t mean lower pay, wages or benefits.

How Kinmu helps

Common questions

Have the STPS rules been published yet?

The decree says they come into force from 1 January 2027, but it doesn’t set a publication date. Check the Diario Oficial de la Federación to see whether they are out.

Does using Kinmu guarantee that I comply with the law?

No. Kinmu helps you keep the electronic record and have it ready to hand over. What you must record and provide is set by the law and the STPS rules.
